Clean, Green Orlova South

Luxury coaching operator, Orlova South Ltd have been awarded the Qualmark® Enviro-Gold grading in recognition of their adherence to clean, green initiatives in their business. One of three transport companies in NZ to have achevied the highest possible grading.

The Qualmark® Enviro-Gold is based on assessment of the environmental practices in a business. There are three levels; bronze, silver and gold. “We’re delighted to have been assessed at this gold level, especially as this was only our second attempt and we are a relatively new business”, says joint owner-operator Raewyn Sturzaker.

Trees for Canterbury

The company had already adopted an eco-vision and have been integrating sustainable practices in their business such as; slower paced tours, recycling programme, eco-friendly cleaning products, buying locally, solar panels & double glazed windows, and supporting the ‘Trees for Canterbury’ project. The Trees for Canterbury project involved donating time to plant trees in the Travis Wetlands. “Raewyn and I supported the planting day on 20th September. We really enjoyed being part of a community initiative and giving something back to the environment”, says joint owner-operator Richard Sturzaker. The area is the largest remaining freshwater wetland in Christchurch.

Discover Kaikoura Maori Cultural and Bush Restoration Tour

Orlova South develops personalized tour programmes for guests, from both domestic and international markets. As part of the commitment to the environment, Richard and Raewyn consciously select activities on their tours that also demonstrate a similar commitment to the environment. “One of our activities is the ‘Discover Kaikoura Maori Cultural and Bush Restoration Tour’ in Kaikoura. Not only does this tour share some Maori cultural insights but allows our guests to play their part in restoring the native bush”, says Raewyn.

Passengers on 12 & 18 day tours can plant native trees on a privately owned block of land which is to be developed as a Whanau Marae on the West Coast. The property owners intend this Marae to be used to teach teenagers and the public about Maori folklore, flora and fauna, and include ongoing planting of Native trees, shrubs and grasses. There are also activities to help reduce pests in the area, to maintain and upkeep of this precious amazing asset that boasts incredible 70 year old Native bush.

Ongoing Monitoring and Maintenance

On an ongoing basis the company monitors closely its fuel consumption and ensures the vehicle is well maintained. “On each trip we monitor and complete an extensive check list and service our vehicle between each tour. Passenger safety is paramount and a well maintained vehicle is part of not only protecting the environment but ensuring the vehicle is economic and environmentally sustainable”, says Richard.

Orlova's Unique Luxury Coach

Company owners Raewyn and Richard Sturzaker built their coach to exacting specifications. Though the size of a conventional 50-seater coach, Orlova South’s coach seats only 12 passengers in armchair comfort. Leisure guests can stretch out in style, while business guests can even hold their meetings comfortably on board, as the seating arrangements allow reconfiguration. The seats recline and have footrests. It is believed Orlova South is the only tour operator to carry a defibrillator.

Orlova South’s business plan focuses on international discerning customers and so they believe it very important to demonstrate alignment to New Zealand’s quality message, as demonstrated through the Qualmark® Enviro Gold grade.
